Emergency Response Rooms — a volunteer-led mutual aid network operating across Sudan, since April 2023.
In April 2023, when fighting erupted in Khartoum and spread rapidly across Sudan, hospitals shut down and millions of families were displaced — and communities did not wait for organisations to arrive, they organised themselves. The Emergency Response Rooms grew from resistance and neighbourhood committees, led by decentralized local volunteers, to handle local purchasing of essential supplies, maintain water pumps and generators, provide primary healthcare, and carry out safe evacuations — before any formal relief agency reached them. Today the network operates across 18 states and 96 localities, recognised by UNOCHA, UNICEF, and international donors as a central partner in the humanitarian response.
